Understanding Keyword Difficulty

Keyword difficulty (KD) is a metric that estimates how challenging it would be to rank in the top organic results for a specific keyword. It is typically scored on a scale of 0-100, where higher scores indicate greater competition. Keyword difficulty is calculated based on factors like the domain authority of currently ranking pages, the quality and quantity of their backlinks, content relevance, and SERP features present. When planning content strategy, balance keyword difficulty with search volume and business value. New or low-authority sites should target keywords with difficulty under 30, while established sites with strong backlink profiles can compete for keywords with difficulty scores of 60+.
